About Kim's family
Hosting in Mississauga since 2019

Welcome to Casa Carmil! I hosted teens many years ago before young children came along and loved the experience. We took up students again when our kids were older. It has been a great way for our kids, now young adults, to learn about others while providing a safe and comfortable learning experience for an international student. Our kids have now moved on and we have continued to enjoy having youth in the home. We are a diverse family of 4 (Mom, Dad and 2 daughters - who now come to visit - We are a blend of South Asian, Canadian, First Nation, British ,etc.). The adults work fairly regular hours, but have a great deal of flexibility in our schedules. We all have many interests and like to explore and learn about new places, events, foods and cultures. Our weekdays are pretty regular with work and personal activities. (This is pre-Covid times, of course! Now we try to keep as busy around home as best we can, maintaining connections and keeping our brains and bodies active and interested!) We eat many meals at home, but will also order in or try a new restaurant too. We enjoy taking day-trips during the summer months, but we generally like to hang out at home, sometimes with a fire and music outside in our big yard. Our home is located in northwest Milton - 20 minutes from Mississauga. We are used to dropping kids off around the city and we regularly travel into Toronto for work or visiting. Within a very short drive of our home you will find: library, grocery store, drug store, fast food, banking, coffee shops, shopping mall and more. You will come to know that we are very accepting and non-judgmental. We all have our creative sides and like to have music going, a book on the go, something new cooking, or a piece of art, game or puzzle in the works. I like to garden, whether that is at home or in the community as a volunteer. We are generally are a happy house, sometimes boisterous, but mostly caring and fun to be around. While you are here, our house will be your house.

Meals

Breakfast
Host provides material, student prepares own breakfast
Everyone is on their own schedule so there are always choices for a longer breakfast or grab-and-go. Lots of fruit, (berries, bananas, apples, oranges, mango, etc.) toast/croissants, eggs, cereals, yogurts & cranola, smoothies, peanut butter/honey/jam/cheese, often homemade muffins, frozen waffles/pancakes. We often have a bigger family breakfast/brunch on weekend mornings where everyone helps out to make and clean up. Let us know what you like and we will pick it up.

Lunch
Host provides material, student prepares own lunch
Let me know what you like and I will get it. often lots of hot leftovers or something quick to take with you. I always provide fruit and veggies/salad for lunches and they pick out what treats or snacks they want to put in their lunches each morning. Each has their own refillable water bottle. We can get you one too. We don't like to buy bottled water if we can help it.

Dinner
Host prepares dinner for student
I cook most meals such as pasta, roasts, stews, stir-fries, curries and awesome soups; I like to try new recipes whenever I can. We eat out or order in about once a week. In the summer we like to Barbeque and enjoy the weather outside with friends and neighbours. I have my own vegetable garden as well so this adds to the fresh food available for the household. Regular meals always include vegetables or salads. We do eat meat, chicken and fish, but am open to more vegetarian meals as well. If there is a dietary or cultural need please let me know and we will do our best to accommodate. We want to try new foods too!

House rules
House rules will be included in the contract after booking
When you are here with us you will be treated as if part of the family. You will have your own space and privacy and we welcome you to join us in daily meals and activities, whether that is hanging out at home or going on a day-trip or out for dinner. Sometimes a drive to a new town just to grab a coffee or try out a bakery. We like to be the house where friends and family hang-out. Please keep your own space tidy and respect the common spaces. If you use it, put it back, hang it up or clean it. We all take turns loading and emptying the dishwasher, setting and clearing the table, assist with meal prep, etc. I do most of the cooking on a regular basis, but request others to assist and not assume this is "my job". I will show you how to do the laundry with our machines so that you can take on this responsibility. Please let me know your plans ahead of time so that I know you are okay and whether to plan for you to be home for dinner or if you need a lunch that day. Curfew and guests are negotiable depending on age/abilities/own parent's wishes (if applicable). No cell phones at the table and we expect engagement, rather than techno-isolation. We encourage you to put your phone away at night time. We want you to learn from us and we hope to learn from you too. Currently, we are following all Covid-19 health and safety protocols within out region and Province and we would expect you to as well.
